John Cena vs. Chris Jericho from WWF’s Vengeance 2002

Sorry for the horrid skits that Zack Ryder made to introduce the match and that intermittently happened with pop-up videos during the match. It’s a good match, so you can deal.

Recap from TJ Hawke:

This was John Cena’s first WWE PPV match. Jericho tried to hit Cena with a chair before the match, but Cena got the chair and hit Jericho. The referee took the chair away and started the match. Seems a little mean of the referee. In the ring, Cena was just running through Jericho.  Jericho cut him off with a hot shot. Jericho got the heat for a bit.  Cena was eventually able to come back with a superplex: 1…2…NO! Jericho came back with a missile dropkick while Cena was going for a Stinger Splash.  Cena came back with a belly-to-belly suplex: 1…2…NO! Jericho hit the bulldog/Lionsault combo. Jericho didn’t go for the pin.  Jericho decided to go for the Walls of Jericho, but Cena caught Jericho with a small package: 1…2…3!

Death, taxes, and Jericho carrying John Cena to good PPV matches. I kid. Cena and Jericho basically proved in this match that no matter how green Cena was, these two are just always going to have fun matches. While these two have never really had a great feud, I’ve always loved their matches together. You absolutely must watch this match just because Cena’s first PPV match is historically significant. On top of that, the match is quite fun.
