John Cena vs. CM Punk from WWE’s SummerSlam 2011

Thoughts from Sam DiMascio:

One of the highly touted matches from Cena and Punk from 2011 just not THE most touted match. This is from SummerSlam and has Triple H as the special guest referee.

Starting with a plus, this match starts out with some early matwork that I enjoy. Enjoy me some matwork. Loved the more technical stuff Punk was doing and Cena’s was more primitive, like chinlocks, and busting out some suplexes out of holds. Then they sorta drifted to match that juts isn’t for me. We got 20+ minutes of stuff which is usually just too much for me. Nothing really gave me that “OOOOOOOOHHHHHH” feeling from the things they did  as they tried to do their signature moves. Of course they would both hit their signature moves and not get pins which means they’re going to attempt to build drama some other way. Too bad it seems like they used the biggest trick up their sleeves and instead we wait for another finisher to come even if it won’t feel as impactful. Enough railing I suppose and back to the things I enjoyed. The moments these two were wailing on each other in the middle of the ring felt big and that is important to me. You can have strike exchanges but if they don’t have any weight behind them they are just a big fat waste of time. Some of the counters they pulled off were also pretty nice. Nothing earth shattering but CM Punk flying into an STF was something different and showed how well these two knew each other. Want to add that they handled Triple H’s participation in this match really well. Remember at the time really thinking he was gonna add a screwy finish but he more acted like a referee where the viewer didn’t have to worry about getting bumped. In all honesty neither wrestler stood out too much to the point I would point to see what either wrestler is fully capable of especially given the great rivalry these two have had. Rather average stuff on the whole.

Beating the 10 Count: Some good stuff in too big a package.
