Verne Gagne vs. Red Bastien from ????

If anyone knows the date of this match, please let me know. Thanks! In the meantime, I’m just using the date the video was upload for lack of a better idea.

Recap from TJ Hawke:

The commentator said this was “No Holds Barred except for kicking and punching.” This should be a division in wrestling now.

Verne kept going for a headscissors. Bastien finally avoided it, and Verne spilled to the floor. Bastien was using his speed, and Verne was using his size advantage. Simple story that can always work when done correctly. This was such a case. Verne went after the left arm. Bastien used his quickness to escape. He then escaped a leg lock and grounded Verne with a side headlock.

Oh, this was beautiful. I still think wrestling like this would get over today. I’m sure some people would point to Timothy Thatcher as an example of that, but I think Thatcher has developed his own style (that does clearly appeal to a ton of people). This is different. There’s a silky-smoothness to this that I find incredibly appealing, and I also love the basic psychology of the strategies employed by both guys. This was fun, and you should watch it.

Match Rating: ***1/2
