Jonathan Gresham vs. BJ Whitmer from IWA-MS 2014
January 11th, 2014
IWA-MS “Out With The Old, In With The New 2014”
Admittedly, I used to watch plenty of IWA-MS years ago but as the promotion has gone through its peaks and valleys, I really haven’t seen that much from them in the past few years so this was a nice treat to find on their YouTube account. These two took part in one of my favorite matches I have seen all year at ROH’s “Winter Warriors: Atlanta” on 2/21/15 in Jonathan Gresham & Corey Hollis vs. Adam Page & BJ Whitmer. This singles match took place a year prior to that match, and it was the first time these two have been in a match with one another.
Gresham goes for control but BJ gets a hip toss. Gresham trips up Whitmer and both go to criss-crossing the ropes. Gresham gets an abdominal stretch but Whitmer gets another hip toss. Gresham tries to trip Whitmer again but BJ is smartened up and stops himself. Whitmer gets Gresham in the corner. Gresham goes to whip him to the other corner. Gresham counters and sits down blocking Whitmer from whipping him. Whitmer pulls Gresham up and Gresham catches him with an armdrag. Up top and BJ gets Gresham in an electric chair position. Gresham takes down BJ with a leg drag Gresham goes to the ropes but BJ knees Gresham in the gut. Whitmer gets a gutwrench style gutbuster. BJ continues to assault the abdomen with knees. He snapmares Gresham down and stretches the shoulder of Gresham with some shots to the midsection. Gresham makes it to the ropes. They exchange strikes with BJ getting the advantage with another knee to the gut. Whitmer scores a Fireman’s Carry Gutbuster over the knee for a 2 count. Chops from Whitmer in the corner. Whitmer sends him to the opposite corner very hard, almost sending Gresham out of the ring as Gresham is showing worse for wear from the work on the midsection. A cover but Gresham bridges out. Gresham gets to his feet and tries to score some strikes, but the size advantage from Whitmer allows him to take advantage.
Gresham tries firing up and scores a roll-up for 2. Whitmer takes him down with another knee. Whitmer goes to the floor and slams Gresham chest first into the apron under the bottom rope. BJ goes for a cover but Gresham has the ropes. Whitmer scoop slams Gresham and grounds him with a modified camel clutch. Gresham fights his way to the ropes. Gresham pushes Whitmer away. Whitmer gets a forearm and uses his boot to choke Gresham in the corner. Whitmer implores Gresham to stay down. BJ charges but Gresham scores a pair of big boots and a headscissors takedown. Gresham hits a vaulting body press to Whitmer on the floor followed by heading back into the ring for a suicide dive on Whitmer on the floor.
Gresham puts him back in the ring and goes to the top. He goes for a Crossbody. Whitmer catches him in a fallaway slam position and Gresham counters into a small package for 2. Gresham goes to the ropes again and scores a satellite style DDT for 2. He gets back to his feet and Whitmer lays him out with a boot to the face and both men are down as PJ Drummond starts the 10 count. Gresham is to his feet first and goes to Whitmer in the corner. Whitmer blocks and goes for a back suplex. Gresham lands on his feet and goes to the ropes and Whitmer immediately hits an Exploder Suplex for 2. BJ sets up Gresham for a Suplex. Gresham gets out and goes for a cradle. Whitmer blocks It and gets him up for a suplex. Gresham counters into a small package for 2. Both to their feet and Whitmer hits a powerslam for another 2 count. Whitmer picks up Gresham but Gresham counters with a school boy for 2. Gresham sets him up for a German Suplex. Whitmer gets out and goes to the ropes. Gresham side steps and hits a German Suplex off the ropes. Gresham gets to his feet and looks to sprint but Whitmer grabs him by the tights and hits a Release German Suplex of his own dropping Gresham on his head. Gresham fires up and hits a Deadlift German Suplex. He goes to the ropes, BJ hits a boot. Gresham fires back with a clothesline for a 2 count. Gresham goes to the ropes again, Whitmer blocks him into Exploder position. Gresham gets out and scores a clothesline to little effect. He goes to the ropes, Whitmer pops up Gresham and Gresham hits a hurricanrana pin. Whitmer rotates over for a 2 count. A second Exploder Suplex from Whitmer gets the win for The Beej.
This was a fun match and worth checking out for sure. I rather enjoyed the early goings of this one a lot. The idea of both of them going to their main styles to try to gain control played well to both of them. Jonathan Gresham really deserves to be in a top promotion right now. He has plenty going on for him that would make him stand out in any promotion that would make use of him. Gresham played the cat and mouse game well and was still able to get a flurry of offense when the time was right. Whitmer used the size difference to his advantage. My only complaint was that right when this match seemed to be picking up steam, the match ended. It made me want to see their rematch that they had this past February which took place a week prior to the “Winter Warriors: Atlanta” show with the great tag match involving these two.
