Timothy Thatcher vs. Chris Masters from APW 2012

Recap from TJ Hawke:

The match was for Thatcher’s APW Universal Heavyweight Championship. This was not the Timothy Thatcher that I first got exposed to in 2014. Instead of the intense/physical grappler, he was playing a chickenshit heel. I do not inherently hate the chickenshit heel character, but it’s a jarring difference in Thatcher’s character.

Masters was running through Thatcher early for the most part. Thatcher got back into the match by going after Masters’ left arm. Masters hit a sidewalk slam and then made a comeback. Masters was selling the left arm the whole time. Thatcher went after the left arm again, but Masters got the Masterlock. There was a ref bump, and Thatcher hit a low blow. Schoolboy from Thatcher: 1…2…3

Thatcher’s work on the arm, and Masters’ selling of the arm elevated what would have likely been a forgettable indie match into a “well, the effort was definitely appreciated” level. Thatcher’s focused grappling and chickenshit heel character make for an odd pair, but I’m sure I would get used to it after a few more matches.

Match Rating: **3/4
