Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Yujiro Takahashi from NJPW’s G1 Climax 2012

Recap from TJ Hawke:

Tanahashi was the IWGP Heavyweight Champion at the time. I remember Yujiro getting a title shot about three months after this date. That makes me think this match will end in an upset.

Tanahashi was actually getting a little heat from pockets of fans in the crowd. That’s obviously not unprecedented, but I wouldn’t expect it to happen in a match with Yujiro. The crowd just preferred Yujiro to Tanahashi. Absurd. Yujiro worked him over. Tanahashi eventually made a comeback and got a John Cena reaction. Yujiro came back. In an awesome spot, Tanahashi went to skin the cat, but Yujiro reversed it into a German.  Tanahashi came back with a Sling Blade. Brainbuster from Yujiro. Strait jacket German from Tanahashi. Bridging German from Yujiro: 1…2…NO! Moonsault from Yujiro: 1…2…NO! Tanahashi came back again and hit a bridging dragon suplex for a nearfall. Yujiro hits an Olympic Slam: 1…2…NO! Tanahashi avoided the Dominator and hit another Sling Blade. High Fly Flow to a standing Yujiro! High Fly Flow: 1…2…3!

This match got off to a very awkward start as they did not seem prepared for Tanahashi to be getting some heat. Once the back and forth stuff started to happen though, the crowd did not really care who they preferred.

Match Rating: ***1/4
