CM Punk vs. The Undertaker from WWE’s Smackdown TV 2009

Recap from TJ Hawke:

Punk was coming off his super hot program with Jeff Hardy and now needed to be humbled by The Undertaker for wearing shorts or some shit.

They replayed a goofy angle from earlier in the show where Teddy Long revealed that Hell’s Gate was no longer banned and that Punk had to defend the title against Taker in a Hell in a Cell match. Not sure why they’re having a match now.

Taker was controlling the match early on. This went on too long. Punk finally put a stop to that with a superplex. Punk was in control for a bit. Punk hit a high kick, but Taker caught Punk with Hell’s Gate. Punk got to the ropes. They went to the floor. Taker went to give Punk a Last Ride through a table, but Punk escaped and got back into the ring for the countout win. Punk then ran away as Taker looked moderately peeved in the ring.

These guys proved to have surprisingly good chemistry at times over the years, but they were really not interested in having a good match here. A poor effort.

Match Rating: **
