Shane McMahon vs Cody Rhodes from WWE Superstars on April 16, 2009
Post by The Fray Movement:
I was shocked to find out earlier today that Shane McMahon worked a match on Superstars in 2009. This was that weird time post-WrestleMania 25 where the company was building to a Legacy vs Triple H/Batista/Shane McMahon match at Backlash in a match for the WWE Championship.
I always thought, when I was a dumb 15 year old, that Shane McMahon would actually have been a heck of an underdog type wrestler. But you’ve got the problem of the McMahon last name and that just never would’ve worked.
Normally when you think of Shane McMahon matches you think of glass and blood and stupid, stupid stunts that involve falling 25 feet to the earth. And of course Kurt Angle concusing him over and over again.
But that’s not what happened here.
Shane and Cody went out there and just worked a legit WWE style match. Shane gets the shine early on, doing arm drags and doing HOLDS and working body parts. He may have been the progenitor of Catch Point when you think about it.
Cody takes the upper hand for a bit and the match finally devolves into chaos as the complete the hard sell for the impending PPV.
What a weird match. It wasn’t bad at all. It probably just went a bit long. And it was funny watching mid-20s Cody Rhodes selling for early-40s Shane McMahon.
But it was a match. On SuperStars. The C-show.
What a time to be alive.
