Jeff Hardy vs. Triple H from WWE’s No Mercy 2008

Recap from TJ Hawke: I have very fond memories of this match. They appeared to be following the Code of Honor, but when Jeff turned his head, HHH punched him and got a nearfall with a schoolboy. Haha, yes! Much like Dave Meltzer, Triple H is at his best when he’s being a dick. It took me a few moments, but I finally realized Jim Ross and The Taz were commentary for this match. HHH went for an elevated Pedigree, but Hardy reversed it into a backdrop that sent HHH to the floor. Hardy went for a tope con hello, but HHH moved and Hardy went splat on the floor. HHH was in control and went after Hardy’s back after that. He even locked in the abdominal stretch. Jeff finally came back with his slow-motion Sling Blade. Jeff then got some of his shit in. HHH ended up on the floor, and Jeff hit a tope con hello. Back in the ring, Jeff got a nearfall on a gourdbuster. Jeff went for a crossbody, and HHH sort of reversed it into a spinebuster. That was super sloppy. He then hit a proper spinebuster to a mixed reaction. Whisper in the Wind: 1…2…NO! That was an excellent nearfall. Jeff then went for the Swanton, but HHH avoided it. Jeff avoided a Pedigree into a Twist of Fate! SWANTON! HHH reversed a sloppy pin into a crucifix: 1…2…3!

This has to be one of the two best, non-gimmick, singles match from Triple H (along with the Daniel Bryan Wrestlemania match) since 2000. Every aspect of this match was done exceptionally well. I wish all PPV WWE championship matches could be this interesting. Match Rating: ****
