Fire Ant vs. Vin Gerard from Chikara’s Young Lions Cup 2008

Recap from TJ Hawke:

This match was for the 2008 Young Lions Cup, and it’s a legendary match in Chikara’s history.

Gerard slapped Fire Ant before the bell, but Fire Ant…fired back. Fire Ant hit a tope suicida, but Gerard cut him off. The commentators explained how Gerard and the Colony have had their issues all year. Gerard no longer likes wrestlers with masks. Solder Ant, Worker Ant, and a lot of the other tecnicos came out to support Fire Ant. Gerard managed to keep control though. Fire Ant was on the verge of a comeback, but Gerard pushed Bryce Remsburg  into the ropes in order to crotch Fire Ant. Fire Ant managed to come back with a Fireman’s Carry to the floor. Ouch. Gerard actually almost got counted out on that. Fire Ant made a big comeback, but Gerard got the STF. Fire Ant escaped, but then ate a pair of powerbombs. Gerard went for the Chikara Special, but Fire Ant escaped and hit the Air Raid Crash for a nearfall. Gerard managed to hit a powerbomb and get his feet on the ropes: 1…2…NO! STF! Fire Ant survived but then ate three straight curb stomps before Gerard applied the STF again. They rolled to the floor, but Gerard kept the hold applied. Fire Ant was then dragged back into the crowd. Gerard tried to win by countout. Fire Ant crawled and crawled until he got back into the ring after the 19 count. Gerard went for the Red Star Press (which was apparently very significant), but Fire Ant avoided it and hit a Burning Hammer! GERARD NO SELLS IT! AIR RAID CRASH: 1…2…3!

I did not start following Chikara in real earnest until 2011, and I never got why fans spoke highly of Vin Gerard. There was a lingering fondness for him that I could not appreciate. Finally seeing matches like really help me understand why he was considered a hot character for them and in independent wrestling in general. I was not able to appreciate some of the story line details of this match, but the environment and the other work done was more than enough to make me love this match. Great work by these two men.

Match Rating: ****1/4
