Hiroshi Tanahashi & Koji Kanemoto vs. Giant Bernard & Travis Tomko from NJPW’s G1 Tag League 2007

Recap from TJ Hawke:

This was the finals of the 2007 G1 Tag League.

Tanahashi refused to shake Bernard’s hand before the match. Tanahashi had defeated Bernard in the finals to crown the new IWGP Heavyweight Champion in 2006. So, maybe that lack of handshake had some meaning behind it as opposed to Tanahashi randomly acting like a dick.

Tomko was isolated and worked over for a bit. He eventually tagged out after catching Tanahashi with a lariat. Tanahashi was then worked over. Tanahashi blocked a Vader bomb from Bernard and then tagged out. The teams were going back and forth. Kanemoto applied an ankle lock on Bernard. Bernard seemed close to submitting, but he made it to the ropes. Tanahashi hit Bernard with High Fly Flow, and Kanemoto then hit a moonsault. Tomko made the save. Kanemoto then ate the Tornado-plex, but Tanahashi made the save. Tomko got sent to the floor, and Tanahashi hit him with a pescado.Bernard took out Tanahashi with a lariat. Kanemoto started to attack Bernard, but Bernard hit him with a Liger Bomb: 1…2…3

This is one of those matches where the work done before the back and forth closing stretch is completely meaningless. It didn’t add anything and just served to make the match longer. The closing stretch was fun though and finished the match on a good note.

Match Rating: ***1/4
