Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Toru Tano from NJPW’s G1 Climax 2007

Recap from TJ Hawke:

Yano attacked Tanahashi before the bell, and they quickly spilled out onto the floor. Yano tied Tanahashi to the barricade and tried to win via countout. Tanahashi just managed to get back into the ring tough. Tanahashi fought back and got control. Yano cut him off though after he dumped Tanhashi to the floor. He used a chair against him. Yano applied a single leg crab in the ring, but Tanahashi got to the ropes. After Tanahashi skinned the cat, he made a comeback. Yano came back with a low blow and a small package for a nearfall. Tanahashi won a slap exchange and then hit a Sling blade. Yano avoided High Fly Flow but then ate a bridging German for another nearfall. They started brawling on the floor some more. Both men got counted out. It seemed that Yano was more concerned with not losing as opposed to winning.

Yano’s strategy was logical, but it did not make for a very fun viewing experience or for a satisfying conclusion to the match. Tanahashi really was missing something here compared to where he would be a few years later. He did not have the commanding presence that I’ve come to expect from him.

Match Rating: **1/4
