Hiroshi Tanahashi & Koji Kanemoto vs. Shinsuke Nakamura & Masahiro Chono from NJPW’s G1 Tag League Final 2006

Recap from TJ Hawke:

This was the finals of the 2006 G1 Tag League. This is a little embarrassing to admit, but I’ve never seen a Chono match before. Chono and Nakamura were accompanied by Travis Tomko and Giant Bernard. Tanahashi was in the middle of his first IWGP Heavyweight Championship reign at this time.

Neither team could get decisive control for a while. After an extended battle between Nakamura and Tanahashi, the match broke down. Tanahashi was worked over after that. Chono hit multiple piledrivers, but Tanahashi would not stay down. Tanahashi came back with a missile dropkick. He and Kanemoto then hit stereo pescados. Kanemoto tagged in and applied an ankle lock on Chono. Nakamura eventually saved him, but Kanemoto then hit Chono with a moonsault for a nearfall. Kanemoto and Tanahashi remained in control for a bit. Nakamura came back with an armbreaker on Kanemoto. Tanahashi made the save, but Nakamura hit him with the Funplex. A Funplex for Kanemoto. Kanemoto caught him with a great small package for a nearfall. Shining Wizard from Nakamura! Landslide: 1…2…3!

The structure of this match was very odd, but I had a lot fun watching this. It’s really cool to go back and watch old Tanahashi/Nakamura matches. I wish I was following Japan companies for as long as I’ve been following American companies.

Match Rating: ***1/4
