Matt Sydal vs. Ricochet from IWA-MS 2006

Post by Case Lowe:

In hindsight, this is a very interesting match. Sydal and Ricochet are current IWGP Jr Tag Team Champions and before that they had a brief run in Dragon Gate (which I adored). This was their first of four singles matches together, with the subsequent matches coming in IWA-MS (again), EVOLVE, and finally PWG.

This is still in the early stages of Ricochet’s career, before his run as a Spiked Mohican and his current incarnation as Balding Trevor. Floppy hair, baggy shorts Ricochet is fascinating to watch, as often times he was, at worst, good, but he looked so bad that I think it actually took away from a majority of his matches around this time.

I expected this to be off-the-charts and sporadic, as both guys were really young in their careers. Sydal was clearly more polished, but Ricochet held his own here and they kept things very, very simple. Sydal got the heat, Ricochet made a hot comeback, and the two battled until the end.

Scary moment near the end as Ricochet missed his Double Moonsault and landed on his neck. It’s a great move when executed, but I’m really happy he doesn’t do it anymore. It’s one of the few things that in wrestling that makes me cringe.

Surprisingly simple and really fun match. Recommended if you’re a fan of either man.
