Samoa Joe vs. AJ Styles from TNA’s Turning Point 2005

Recap from TJ Hawke:

AJ Styles’ X-Division Champion and Samoa Joe’s TNA undefeated streak were on the line.

AJ dominated for a few minutes. Joe came back with some thunderous kicks. Joe was then in control for a while. AJ went for a springboard move, but Joe reversed it into a powerbomb. AJ came back by sending Joe to the floor and hitting the Fosbury Flop. Back in the ring, Joe slowed down AJ’s momentum with a snap powerslam. They traded some strikes. AJ pulled off a powerbomb for a nearfall. Joe came back with a monster lariat. AJ hit the Pele. Styles Clash: 1…2…NO! Coquina Clutch! AJ passed out! New champ!

Joe attacked AJ after the match. “He broke the code again!” Mike Tenay confirmed to be a huge ROH mark. Christopher Daniels made the save.

This is probably one of my favorite TNA matches ever. Joe and AJ had a tremendous dynamic that was pretty much idiot-proof. Big athletic guy vs. flippy athletic guy pretty much is a recipe for success, and these two executed it as well as you can.

Match Rating: ****1/4
