Mickie Knuckles vs. Hailey Hatred from IWA-Mid South’s King of the Deathmatches 2005

Review by Reed Benson:

Mickie’s IWA-MS Women’s title is on the line. While it does have its moments, as a complete package it comes across as rather choppy. By that, I mean that the transitions between portions of the match (striking on the inside to going outside to Hailey getting the heat back inside, etc.) don’t go that smoothly. Also, they hit each other hard and don’t always sell, though I guess that’s to be expected.

I think the thing that really screws it up is when they miss the ref bump spot and have to do it again. Bailey is supposed to yank the ref into the corner so he gets hit with Mickie’s running dropkick instead of her, but either she or the ref mistime the spot, so Mickie just dropkicks the turnbuckle and lies there like she got shot while they try to figure out how to set it up again.

When they do redo the ref bump, Daizee Haze runs in from the commentary table with title belt and knocks Mickie out. Then she puts Hailey on top of her for the pin and the title change. I don’t know how hard or heavy that belt was, but title belts don’t seem like knockout weapons to me most of the time anyway, and much less when they’re wielded by someone as wispy as Daizee against someone as tough and hard-headed as Mickie. Perception is everything in wrestling.

All told, a botched ref bump and an unbelievable finish make this promising match much duller than I’d hoped.

I don’t often tweet about wrestling, but I have a Tumblr gimmick for it here.
