AJ Styles vs. Christopher Daniels from TNA’s Bound for Glory 2005

Recap from TJ Hawke:

This was a thirty minute Iron Man match for AJ’s X-Division Championship.

Daniels was quickly in control, but AJ came back and hit a dive into the crowd. AJ used an obscenely long headlock to get firm control. These guys were not interested in doing anything of note for a long time. Daniels blocked a springboard forearm and then worked over AJ. He went after AJ’s neck and then applied the Koji Clutch. AJ got to the ropes. AJ made a comeback after hitting a springboard reverse DDT. Daniels caught him with a DVD and then made a comeback of his own. Daniels hit the BME: 1…2…NO! TORTURE RACK~! I love AJ torture racks. Daniels came back with a tope suicida. AJ caught Daniels with the Pele, and then hit the tope con HELLO. Daniels gave AJ a back suplex from the apron to the floor. They traded punches and pinning combinations in the ring. AJ no-sold a German and hit a discus lariat. Two minutes left. Neither guy could get a pin. They teased the finish of the Unbreakable match, but Daniels kicked out!. Styles hit the Styles Clash: 1…2…3! The pin happened one second before the time ran out.

I didn’t completely dislike this match, but there was nothing about it that justified its length. I see Iron Man matches as a stipulation you need to really overbook in order to make it work, and these guys did the opposite. Neither guy has ever been a “thirty minute singles” guy, and there was no reason to expect this to be a great idea.

Match Rating: **3/4
