Mike Quackenbush, Skayde, Shane Storm, & Lance Steel vs. Chris Hero, Claudio Castagnoli, Icarus, & Gran Akuma from NEXT 2005

Review by Reed Benson:

These were the days when Gran Akuma and Skayde were still masked, and when Claudio and Hero still dressed like they belonged in the crowd instead of the ring. This is the prototypical match that Chikara used to export to various other promotions in the earlier 2000’s, though it may be a bit longer. There’s a lot of fast-paced, lucha-inspired action early on, and everyone gets to showcase something. I really enjoyed most of it, even when Shane Storm got his Botchamania on. The rudo team constantly cut off the technicos by quadruple-teaming whoever got tagged in until Quack finally made a successful hot tag (not sure why they didn’t gang up on him; maybe they were too tired by that point?).

Unfortunately, the finish put an anti-climactic stamp on things, as Akuma was supposed to get the rope-assisted pin on Storm, but he really wasn’t positioned well enough to make it work. Turning to hold the ropes after performing a sunset flip…doesn’t that take pressure off of the other guy’s shoulders? Seems counter-productive to me.

Anyway, if you’re the type who can enjoy the bulk of a match in spite of a flat finish, definitely check this one out.
