Katsuyori Shibata vs. Yui Nagata from NJPW’s G1 Climax 2003

Recap from TJ Hawke:

Nagata is in his mid thirties here. Shibata is much heavier. He’s not fat, but he looks to be in worse shape than he is now (2014). Nagata got an armbar and then got the cross armbreaker. Shibata survived, but Nagata had control of the match. He worked Shibata over for a while. Shibata made a comeback that included two straight STOs. That’s a first. Shibata got a variation of the Anaconda Vice. Nagata escaped a sleeper attempt and then got the eye rollback armbar. He did not roll his eyes back though. Hashtag sad panda. Shibata made the ropes. Shibata came back with a sleeper. Nagata came back with a saito suplex and a high knee in the corner. He hit another saito suplex. They brawled on the floor. Nagata gave him an exploder on the mat. Nagata brawled with Shibata’s second. Double countout. The crowd is NOT happy.

Neither am I. The match was building well enough, but that finish was awful. The match was worth watching though just to see Shibata in 2003.

Match Rating: **1/4
