Paul London vs. Michael Shane from ROH’s Unscripted 2002

Recap from TJ Hawke:

Shane speared London to the floor. Ouch. Shane then sent London into a barricade. London came back and picked up a chair. Shane then hit London with a hilo where he landed hard on the chair. Shane was in control for a while after that. Shane set up a chair in the ropes, but London managed to send Shane into the chair. Shane got busted open. Shane took out a ladder, and London then kicked the ladder into Shane’s face. Back in the ring, London went for…something. It didn’t work out and Shane got kicked in the face.  Shane came back with a belly-to-belly suplex on the ladder: 1…2…NO! London came back with a hurricanrana through a table on the floor. Back in the ring, London backdropped Shane onto a ladder. Shane started to crawl to the back. London ran up the ladder and did a hilo onto Shane. Back in the ring, London used the ladder to propel himself higher in the air for a dive, but Shane caught him with a powerbomb: 1…2…NO! Shane hit a diving elbow for a nearfall. London hit a shooting star press for a nearfall. Shane hit an elbow off the ladder: 1…2…NO! Shane started to climb again, but London caught him with a lionsault. London climbed the cage. The fans chanted “Please Don’t Die!” London hit a shooting star off the ladder: 1…2…3!

If you haven’t seen any of ROH’s early stuff, then this is an ABSOLUTE must see match. This is such a different match than you see in ROH since Gabe Sapolsky left. 2002-2003 ROH has a real distinct tone, and this match somehow captures it perfectly (even though hardcore style matches weren’t common). Excellent match.

Match Rating: ***3/4
