The Rock & Kurt Angle vs. The Dudley Boyz (Bubba Ray & D’Von Dudley) from WWF Smackdown 2001

Recap from TJ Hawke:

The match was for the Dudleys’ WWF Tag Team Championships. Kurt Angle was the WWF Champion at the time. The Rock was the WCW Champion. According to Paul Heyman on commentary, this was the first time the current WWF and WCW Champions tagged together. This was in the middle of the putrid Invasion angle.

Rock and Angle had a lot of success early on. Rock eventually got cut off and then was worked over. Rock eventually hit D’Von with a DDT and then tagged out to Angle. Angle made an awesome comeback. D’Von ate the Olympic Slam, but Bubba made the save. The Dudleys then cut off Angle and worked him over. Bubba then told D’Von that they need to go after Kurt’s injured neck. Angle escaped after a long beatdown, and Rock made a big hot tag. D’Von ate a spinebuster and a People’s Elbow. Bubba had to make the save. Angle applied the ankle lock on Bubba. Rock got the sharpshooter on D’Von. Shane McMahonTest, & Booker T ran out. Shane punched out the referee. The Dudleys put Angle through a table with a 3D. They did the same with The Rock. No finish was announced.

This match was really awesome until the awful finish that wasn’t even really a finish. Tag team matches with WWE main eventers are the easiest thing for the company to do, but they stand out even more when hard workers like Rock and Angle are involved.

Match Rating: ***1/2
