Diamond Dallas Page vs. Curt Hennig from WCW’s Starrcade 1997

Recap from TJ Hawke:

This match was for Hennig’s United States Championship. They did a belt-stealing angle for the WCW Saturday Night show the night before, but JJ Dillon told him on the day of Starrcade to return it. He told DDP to earn the belt. This match was supposed to be Hennig vs. Flair for the belt according to the commentary, but I think Flair ended up in a match with Bischoff. I’ll check that out. (Edit:It was Larry Zbyszko.)

Hennig avoided an early Diamond Cutter attempt, and Hennig went to the floor. Neither man could get a decisive advantage for a while. Hennig eventually used the ropes as a weapon to cut off Page, and he then went to work on Page’s taped ribs. This heat segment got really dull when Hennig applied a seemingly, never-ending chinlock. DDP hit a jawbreaker and then made a comeback (which included a Diamond Dallas Pescado). He went for the Diamond Cutter, but Hennig held onto the ropes. DDP got a nearfall with a schoolboy and then another one with a small package. Hennig took him down a lariat for his own nearfall. DDP reversed a Perfect-plex attempt into a Divorce Court.  Hennig went for a lariat, but DDP reversed it into a Diamond Cutter: 1…2…3

The finish was pretty much the only thing about this match that got over.  I enjoyed a few moments here and there of this one, but it was definitely a disappointment overall. It’s crazy to see how boring Mr. Perfect got later in his career. It’s so deceptive, because he pretty much looked the same.

Match Rating: **1/4
