Steve Austin & Steve Williams vs. Dustin Rhodes & Barry Windham from WCW’s Halloween Havoc 1992

Recap from TJ Hawke:

Before the match, we saw a promo from the challengers with Teddy Long. I’ve now seen two Steve Williams promos, and they’ve both been hilariously awful.

After a lengthy sequence where the teams battled for control, Stunning Steve is YOUR heel in peril. Steve finally escaped at one point and tagged out to Dr. Death. The challengers eventually cut off Windham and then worked him over. Windham hit a diving lariat on Austin, and Dustin then made a hot tag. Dr. Death managed to cut off Dustin with a lariat, and Dustin then got worked over. Dustin kept fighting back, but the challengers appeared to always stay a step ahead of him. This went on for about ten minutes. He finally tagged out, but it was ruled invalid because the referee was distracted. Ref bump. A second ref ran in right after Dr. Death took down Windham with a lariat: 1…2…3?

The bell rang, but the original ref tried to throw the decision out because Windham was not the legal man. Dustin then caught Austin with an O’Connor Roll: 1…2…No? Hard to tell because the bell rang again. The match completely broke down. Austin and Rhodes were the legal men. One minute remaining in the time limit. Dustin hit a tombstone: 1…2…NO! The time limit expired.

Windham and Dustin retained the tag titles.

This was very long. I liked the structure of the match, but it was the wrong match for this crowd which took it down considerably. After making through the match in such a cold environment, it was a bit disheartening to get the finishing sequence that we did. Solid work. Bad booking.

Match Rating: **3/4
